Ranger's Apprentice

Twelve books. One legendary world. Follow Will Treaty from orphan boy to the most skilled ranger in the kingdom of Araluen.

The Ruins of Gorlan

Ranger's Apprentice begins with The Ruins of Gorlan, published in 2004. Will, a young orphan ward of the feudal castle Redmont, dreams of becoming a knight like the father he never knew. When the time comes to choose a craft, Will is rejected by the Battle School and instead selected by the mysterious ranger Halt as his apprentice. Will learns the ranger's arts of stealth, tracking, and the longbow, all while a greater threat gathers in the north. The exiled warlord Morgarath, once defeated at the Mountains of Rain and Night, plots his return with a terrifying army of Wargals. The Ruins of Gorlan lays the foundation of the entire series, establishing the friendship between Will and Horace and the extraordinary bond between Will and his mentor Halt.

The Burning Bridge

The Burning Bridge picks up where The Ruins of Gorlan left off. Will and his friend Horace accompany the ranger Gilan on a diplomatic mission to Celtica, but the towns they pass through are deserted. Morgarath's forces have pressed the Celticans into slave labour, building a bridge that would allow his army to bypass Araluen's defences. Will and a Celtica girl named Evanlyn must race to destroy that bridge before the enemy crosses. The Burning Bridge raises the stakes considerably and ends with a cliff-hanger that propelled the series to bestseller lists across Australia and around the world.

The Icebound Land

The Icebound Land follows Will and Evanlyn as captives of the Skandian sea wolves, transported north to the brutal, frozen land of Skandia. Halt, refusing to abandon his apprentice, defies the king's command and sets out alone to bring Will home. The Icebound Land explores themes of addiction, loyalty, and sacrifice. Will is forced to drink warmweed, a drug that dulls the mind and dulls the will to survive. Halt's relentless pursuit and Evanlyn's fierce resourcefulness carry the story through its darkest passages.

The Battle for Skandia

The Battle for Skandia resolves the Skandian arc with an unlikely alliance. Will, recovered from his warmweed dependency, teams up with Halt, Horace, and Evanlyn alongside Skandian leader Erak. A new threat arrives from the east: the Temujai, a ruthless horse-mounted army that intends to use Skandia as a staging ground for an invasion of Araluen. Will and his companions must convince the proud Skandians to fight alongside Araluen rangers. The Battle for Skandia is a full-scale military adventure that rewards readers who have followed the series from the first book.

The Sorcerer of the North

The Sorcerer of the North opens a new chapter in the series. Will, now a fully qualified ranger, is assigned to the fief of Norgate in the far north of Araluen. A local lord lies in a mysterious coma, a cult worshipping a so-called sorcerer named Malkallam terrorises the region, and Will must uncover the truth behind the apparent dark magic while maintaining his cover identity. Meanwhile Horace travels to the southern lands of Gallica on a diplomatic mission. The Sorcerer of the North marks Will's debut as an independent ranger and shifts the series into a more complex, character-driven gear.

The Siege of Macindaw

The Siege of Macindaw is the direct sequel to The Sorcerer of the North. Will discovers that Castle Macindaw has been seized by the treacherous knight Sir Keren, who is secretly cooperating with the Scotti raiders from the north. With Halt unavailable and the kingdom's northern defences at risk, Will must coordinate a siege with only a handful of allies: a Skandian sailor named Orman and a band of outlaws from Grimsdell Wood. The Siege of Macindaw showcases Will's growth as a tactician and leader, relying on wit and improvisation rather than numbers.

Erak's Ransom

Erak's Ransom is set chronologically between books four and five, returning to the period just after Will earns his silver oakleaf. Skandian leader Erak is captured by a desert tribe called the Arridi, and Will, Halt, Horace, Evanlyn, and Gilan travel to the desert kingdom of Arrida to negotiate a ransom. The mission becomes far more dangerous than anticipated when rival desert factions, sandstorms, and treachery complicate every step. Erak's Ransom expands the world of Ranger's Apprentice considerably, introducing the Arridi culture and testing every member of the team.

The Kings of Clonmel

The Kings of Clonmel takes Will, Halt, and Horace to the neighbouring kingdom of Clonmel on the island of Hibernia, Halt's homeland. A false religious cult called the Outsiders is sweeping across the land, offering protection from bandits in exchange for gold. Halt's past catches up with him when the cult's leadership reveals a deeply personal connection. The Kings of Clonmel is one of the most character-rich entries in the series, exploring Halt's backstory in full and giving readers a much clearer picture of who the stoic ranger truly is.

Halt's Peril

Halt's Peril is the direct sequel to The Kings of Clonmel. The Outsider cult, driven from Clonmel, flees back into Araluen. During the pursuit, Halt is struck by a poisoned crossbow bolt, and Will must race to find an antidote while the clock runs down. Halt's Peril is the most emotionally intense entry in the series. The threat of losing the mentor who shaped Will's entire life gives the book a weight that even the large-scale battles of earlier volumes could not match. Flanagan writes the relationship between Will and Halt with rare depth here.

The Emperor of Nihon-Ja

The Emperor of Nihon-Ja sends Horace to the far eastern land of Nihon-Ja, a nation modelled on feudal Japan. Horace finds himself protecting the rightful emperor from a rebel lord whose forces vastly outnumber the imperial guard. Will, Halt, Alyss, and Evanlyn mount a rescue mission across the sea. The Emperor of Nihon-Ja is the most globe-spanning adventure in the main series, introducing entirely new cultures, weapons, and fighting styles. Flanagan delivers the series' most satisfying action sequences here, culminating in a battle that draws on every skill the characters have accumulated across nine previous books.

The Lost Stories

The Lost Stories is a collection of nine short stories set in the world of Ranger's Apprentice. The collection fills in gaps from the main series: what really happened when Halt was exiled from Araluen, the full story of Will's parents, and a series of smaller adventures that never made it into the main novels. The Lost Stories also includes a framing device in which Flanagan himself appears as a character, discovering a medieval manuscript. The collection is essential reading for fans who want to understand every corner of the Araluen world before the series concludes.

The Royal Ranger

The Royal Ranger is the final book of the original Ranger's Apprentice series. Five years have passed. Will Treaty is now a senior ranger, but grief and guilt have left him withdrawn and reckless. When he is assigned a reluctant new apprentice, Princess Maddie, daughter of Horace and Evanlyn, his sense of purpose begins to return. A slave-trading ring operating inside Araluen gives the pair their first joint mission. The Royal Ranger brings the series full circle: Will becomes what Halt once was to him, and the cycle of mentorship and growth that defines Ranger's Apprentice is made explicit. A new series, also titled The Royal Ranger, continued Maddie's story in subsequent volumes.

Will Treaty

Will Treaty is the protagonist of the Ranger's Apprentice series. Will grows up as a ward of Redmont Fief, never knowing his parents, and dreams of following in his unknown father's footsteps by joining the Battleschool. When the ranger Halt selects Will as his apprentice instead, Will discovers a path that suits him far better than armour ever would. Will is naturally curious, quick-witted, and small for his age, qualities that make him a remarkable ranger. Over twelve books, Will evolves from an eager, impulsive boy into a composed and deeply skilled ranger, trusted by kings and feared by enemies. His character is defined by loyalty: to Halt, to Araluen, and to the friends who travel with him through every crisis.

A weathered, cloaked figure in a wood, representing Halt from Ranger's Apprentice

Halt

Halt is the ranger of Redmont Fief and Will's mentor. Halt is one of the most respected rangers in the corps, feared throughout Araluen and beyond for his almost supernatural skill with the longbow and his talent for appearing exactly where he is least expected. Behind the gruff exterior and the withering sarcasm lies a man of absolute loyalty, deep compassion, and a complicated past. Halt was born a prince of Clonmel but fled his homeland after a betrayal, eventually finding purpose in the Ranger Corps and in the mentorship of young apprentices. The relationship between Halt and Will is the emotional core of the entire series. Halt also shares a long, bantering friendship with the ranger Gilan, and a marriage with the court courier Lady Pauline.

A young knight in training representing Horace from Ranger's Apprentice

Horace

Horace Altman grows up alongside Will as a ward of Redmont, but where Will goes to the ranger, Horace enters the Battleschool and trains as a knight. Horace is physically formidable, brave to the point of recklessness, and possesses a sword skill that surpasses almost everyone he meets. He is also straightforward, honest, and often baffled by the subtlety and deception that ranger work requires, which makes him an endearing contrast to Will and Halt. Horace becomes the knight known across the continent as the Oakleaf Knight, a title earned through deeds in Gallica and Nihon-Ja. By the end of the series, Horace has married Evanlyn, who becomes Princess Cassandra of Araluen, and the two raise the next generation's protagonist, Maddie.

A resourceful young woman in medieval clothing representing Evanlyn from Ranger's Apprentice

Princess Evanlyn

Princess Evanlyn, whose real name is Cassandra, is the crown princess of Araluen. Evanlyn travels under her alias when she and Will become prisoners of the Skandians in The Burning Bridge. She is courageous, resourceful, and fiercely independent, refusing to wait for rescue when action is available to her. Evanlyn keeps her royal identity secret for much of the series, partly for safety and partly because she values being judged on her own merits rather than her title. Her relationship with Will is one of mutual respect and genuine warmth, tested repeatedly by circumstance. By the end of the series, Evanlyn has become Queen-in-waiting, married to Horace, and the mother of Maddie, whose story continues in The Royal Ranger books.

A ranger on horseback on a forest trail, representing Gilan from Ranger's Apprentice

Gilan

Gilan is Halt's former apprentice and one of the finest rangers in the corps. Gilan carries a sword in addition to the standard ranger longbow, a habit Halt disapproves of but that Gilan wields with exceptional skill. Gilan is cheerful, quick to laugh, and deceptively sharp, a contrast to Halt's studied severity. Gilan serves as a bridge between the world Will joins and the history of the Ranger Corps, and his missions alongside Will in the early books help establish the standards and culture of the rangers. Later in the series, Gilan rises to become Commandant of the Ranger Corps, a position that suits both his talent and his natural authority.

An elegant woman in a medieval court setting representing Alyss from Ranger's Apprentice

Alyss

Alyss is a courier, a member of the elite diplomatic corps that serves the king of Araluen. Couriers are trained in communication, diplomacy, disguise, and self-defence. Alyss grows up alongside Will in Redmont and the two share a close friendship that develops into a deeper bond over the course of the series. Alyss is tall, poised, and possessed of a razor intelligence. Where Will operates in shadows with a bow, Alyss operates in courts and negotiations, often in plain sight. Alyss appears prominently from book five onward, including a central role in The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, and her relationship with Will gives the series a quiet emotional thread running underneath the battles and adventures.

A forbidding fortress representing the villain Morgarath from Ranger's Apprentice

Morgarath

Lord Morgarath is the primary antagonist of the first two books in the series. Morgarath was once a powerful lord of Araluen who turned traitor, plotting against the king and raising an army of Wargals, monstrous creatures he controls through a form of dark mental dominion. Defeated and exiled to the Mountains of Rain and Night, Morgarath spends fifteen years rebuilding his forces and planning his return. Morgarath is cold, calculating, and entirely without scruple. Flanagan uses Morgarath to establish the moral stakes of the series early: some people choose power over loyalty, and the consequences echo long after the initial choice is made.

A composed, elegant woman in a courtly setting representing Lady Pauline from Ranger's Apprentice

Lady Pauline

Lady Pauline is the senior courier of Redmont Fief and, later, Halt's wife. Pauline is one of the most capable characters in the series, conducting her missions with calm authority and a social intelligence that complements Halt's blunter skill set perfectly. Pauline serves as a steadying presence for Will during his childhood at Redmont, and her marriage to Halt is one of the series' most satisfying long-running threads. She appears in key moments throughout the series, always with purpose and always with effect. Lady Pauline represents the courier corps at its best: effective, dignified, and entirely underestimated by those who do not know better.

Rangers Apprentice Movie

A Ranger's Apprentice movie has been in various stages of development since the mid-2010s, when Walden Media, the studio behind The Chronicles of Narnia films, acquired the rights to adapt the series for the screen. John Flanagan expressed enthusiasm for the project, and early reports suggested the first book, The Ruins of Gorlan, would serve as the basis for the film.

As of 2026, no confirmed production date or cast has been officially announced. Development on large-scale fantasy adaptations can span many years, and Ranger's Apprentice is no exception. The series has the world-building depth and the character relationships that translate well to film, and fan interest remains high.

Ranger's Apprentice has also been discussed in the context of streaming adaptation, with platforms hungry for fantasy properties following the success of similar series. John Flanagan himself has noted in interviews that he hopes to see Will, Halt, and Horace on screen in a production that honours the books' tone: adventurous, grounded, and character-led.

This page will be updated as new information about the Ranger's Apprentice movie or streaming adaptation becomes available. Fans seeking the latest news are encouraged to follow John Flanagan's official channels and publishing announcements.
